The Department of English at Annai Violet Arts & Science College, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and the Institution's Innovation Council (IIC), organized a Scrabble masterclass on Tuesday, July 23, 2024. The objective of the Scrabble masterclass was to enhance students' vocabulary and strategic thinking skills.
The event was conducted by Mr. Ranganatha Chakravarthy, India’s Scrabble champion and founder of the Madras Scrabble Association. Over 80 students from various streams attended the masterclass, participating in two interactive sessions designed to enhance their vocabulary and strategic thinking skills.The masterclass featured a detailed presentation (PPT) covering the tricks, dos and don’ts, and the rules and regulations of Scrabble. Mr. Chakravarthy introduced students to new words and their meanings, significantly expanding their vocabulary. He also shared valuable strategies and techniques to excel in Scrabble, making the game both fun and intellectually stimulating. The use of a PPT allowed for a clear and engaging presentation of Scrabble rules and strategies. Mr. Chakravarthy brought 40 Scrabble board sets to teach the students, providing a practical, hands-on learning experience that enhanced their understanding and enjoyment of the game. The event sparked a friendly competitive spirit among students, motivating them to challenge their peers and themselves in finding new words. Students found the masterclass unique and amazing, expressing a strong willingness to learn more words and improve their language skills.
The Scrabble masterclass significantly improved students' vocabulary skills and understanding of word usage. The interactive nature of the sessions heightened student interest and enthusiasm for language. The event also encouraged collaborative learning and healthy competition, fostering a community of learners eager to expand their knowledge. The insights and strategies shared by Mr. Chakravarthy equipped students with tools for lifelong learning, enabling them to continue improving their vocabulary and strategic thinking skills in the long term.
