Field Visit – Subam Sericulture Farming” Chengapet, Chennai, Tamil Nadu

On 7th March 2026, the Department of Microbiology with IQAC organized a field Visit to “Silk worm rearing and silk harvesting” Chengapet, Chennai and Tamil Nadu. During the visit, the students were guided by Mr. R. Venkatesan, Senior Inspector of Sericulture, and Mr. Gunasekaran, an experienced sericulture farmer. The resource persons explained the entire process of silkworm rearing, starting from the egg stage to the formation of cocoons. Students learned about the different growth stages of silkworms, including larva, pupa, and adult moth stages. They were also introduced to the proper maintenance of rearing houses, temperature control, hygiene practices, and feeding schedules required for healthy silkworm growth.                                   

             In addition, the experts demonstrated various types of mulberry plants cultivated for sericulture and explained how mulberry leaves serve as the primary food source for silkworms. Students observed how the leaves are harvested, stored, and supplied as feed during different growth stages of the silkworms. The process of cocoon formation and silk harvesting from the cocoons was also explained in detail, giving students a clear understanding of silk production.
