From Waste to Energy: A Visit to Mini Biogas Plant at Amma Unavagam

📅Date: July 31, 2025

On July 31st, 2025, the IQAC and the Department of Microbiology jointly organized a field visit to Amma Unavagam – Thirumullaivoyal and Avadi Branch

The main purpose of the visit was to gain practical knowledge about the process of converting kitchen waste into biogas. The integration of biogas technology into public welfare schemes such as Amma Unavagam served as a real-world example of sustainable waste management practices.

Mrs. Rajeshwari, Chief Supervisor at Amma Unavagam – Thirumullaivoyal, explained how the biogas plant operates using kitchen food waste as the primary input. She described how the collected waste is carefully segregated to remove non-biodegradable items before being fed into the plant. The biogas plant then converts the organic waste into biogas (mainly methane), which is directly used for cooking in the Amma Unavagam kitchen, thereby reducing dependence on LPG.

She also emphasized the importance of regular monitoring and proper waste input to maintain the efficiency of the system
